Balinese Ceramic Successfully Built Its Own Market

Balinese ceramic business is considered to have its own market target, which is not within the same scope as Chinese ceramics or products from other countries. It was confirmed by Export Section Chief of Industrial and Trading Department, Putu Baginda S.E, in Denpasar last Wednesday (02/11/2011).

Ceramics produced in Bali use refined design to create a unique and antique looks. Since it has its own market target, there are no impact from similar products made by China in export trading. "Ceramics from China in the market are not a threat or rival for similar merchandise, it is proven by the increasing export realization of ceramics from this area", he said. Indonesia is the sixth largest ceramic products maker after China, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Brazil.

He also mention that foreign trading of ceramics made by creative artisans in Bali has reached the valuse of US$ 1.6 million in January-September 2011, increased 68 percent compared to the same period in 2010 which was US$ 960 thousand.

Balinese ceramics still gain an advantage in terms of foreign customers. While the global economic condition is still unstable, foreign exchange revenue from ceramics alone gaining a significant percentage increasing. Home ceramic wares such as bowls, plates, or vases from Bali still find a good position for foreign customers especially Japan, United States, Australia, and European countries. Tose ceramic wares are mainly oredered by foreign hotel businessman, especially Japan, but in small amount, said Made Sulasih, a ceramics salesman of a handicraft company in Denpasar.

She said eventhough Chinese ceramics have good quality, but the price are expensive and less popular in the market. Meanwhile Indonesian ceramics, include the ones made by Balinese craftsmen, have good art value and quality but with affrodable prices. That kind of product is preferred by foreign customers, said the professional woman while explaining that some foreign tourists visiting Bali also buy decorations for their office or living room.

Foreign tourists who came to Bali usually buy ceramics made in Bali. Besides its unique design, the price is affordable too. Chinese products are expensive while the quality are not so diiferent compared to Balinese ceramics. With that conditions, foreign ceramic products in Bali are not considered as a threat for local business.
